Symbolically, its volcanic inheritance means change and revolution. But it also carries with it a deeper meaning: reflection and contemplation. The true spirit of this 8 Mountain Year is drawn from stillness, meditation and the quiet anticipation of change.

I Ching Astrology operates under the ancient Chinese Solar Calendar, which begins on 4 February 2010.

Every nine years this special year rotates into place. It is here to remind humanity to take a moment in its development to draw breath, listen, communicate and be still.

The 8 Mountain Year is drawn from the I Ching symbolism of knowledge. The Mountain is “owned” by the tough Youngest Son who likes to do things his way. By instinct, he defies the advice from his older siblings and parents.

Although the Mountain Chi is stubborn and defiant, an 8 Mountain Year heralds change, which can be both challenging and productive. All of our own Stars in I Ching Astrology will be transformed on some level this year by this change.

Change is always positive, if only with the wisdom of hindsight. The really scary thing is the unexpected. Like children, the night before their birthday, who cannot sleep because of the promise of unknown gifts, we cannot anticipate the actual roll of the Tao. But the only child that is disappointed is the one who is demanding and inflexible.

Breathe and sit awhile this year. It will be exciting!

Out of change comes new thinking. Past Mountain Years have been: 1929 with the great Wall Street crash, 1956 with the Suez Crisis, and more recently, 9/11 in 2001. No matter what happens in 2010, history shows us that we, individually and collectively, have the ability to adapt and survive the most challenging circumstances.

7 Lake Star

Right from the start Neil delivered a "take no prisoners" solution to life's dilemmas: "There are no barriers; there are only solutions. Failure is not an option."

"You can turn your baggage into treasures."

That is exactly what he did. His three big "advantages" were:

1. Being born black in Apartheid South Africa

2. Being brought up in a poor working class family

3. Having a major physical disability, which saw him in a full body cast for most of his fifth year.

Prejudice, poverty and disability motivated him to become an elite Round-the-World sailor, a philanthropist and a passionate and inspiring motivational speaker.

Explorer and author Steve Donahue insists that for a successful journey through life we must "follow a compass not the map."

At the second speaker session at Polaris Media Group's Sovereignty Conference on 13 Oct, Steve used his hilarious account of his own journey across the Sahara to motivate people to use their own inner intuition to guide them through life rather than fixed ideas and concepts, represented by maps.

His belief in the power we have to change our visions - or in his words "the stories we tell ourselves about ourselves - fell on receptive ears.

Our brains, he said quoting eminent psychologist James Hillman, just love stories and they love to create maps, But you can never underestimate the "deep guiding force" of the compass, because only that can guide you through uncharted territory.

He encouraged the audience to encapsulate the essence of their own compasses in a short phrase. His was: "Be different." And it was very hard to argue with that.

He believes that our survival gene is so strong that it pulled him back from the brink of death many times. His experience yielded two very powerful messages. First that there is only NOW: the future and past are ultimately just diversions from being totally present. And the second is "our true purpose is to serve."

Battered and bruised almost beyond recognition, Yossi is plucked from the jaws of death by the only other surviving expedition members and local indians. His overwhelming sense of gratitude motivated him to work with the same indigenous people to create the benchmark eco-tourism resort in the area.

This project, created against huge odds, has served to reunite a disintegrating community and continues as a beacon for similar endeavours.

From the depths of what he called the Dark Night of His Soul, his unwavering belief in his vision to help the Indian community ensured that his own personal dream was realised.

His powerful realisations and his great story-telling left a truly profound impression on the conference.

Trust Your Boss: No Way

The ongoing recession is forcing more and more people to look at self-employment. The poisoned atmosphere in much of the corporate world has been recently highlighted by Parisian researcher, Prof Michael Segalla. Junior managers, he has discovered, trust their bosses as little as they do total strangers. Their more senior counterparts are more trusting, but Prof Segalla reports their faith is unfounded; they are the ones most likely to face the axe.
